In addition, methanol and ethanol cannot be used directly in diesel engines because they are not hydrolyzed quickly enough to meet emissions regulations. Accordingly, in order to use this conventional approach for synthesizing biodiesel fuel, the free fatty acids must be first converted to methyl or ethyl esters. There are two primary methods of carrying out this conversion, referred to as transesterification and hydrolysis.
