DIRECTOR OF FINANCE

Full time

AAPF is seeking a strategic, mission-aligned, and experienced Director of Finance to oversee the organization’s financial operations and ensure the sound fiscal management necessary to support our growing impact. This position is a full-time salaried role slated to be filled immediately.

Through innovative research, dynamic public programming, and policy advocacy, AAPF works to reshape discourse and drive systemic change. With a focus on intersectionality, our work addresses the compounding impacts of race, gender, class, and other forms of marginalization. Director of Finance

Reporting to the Vice President, People and Culture, the Director of Finance will be a key member of AAPF’s leadership team, responsible for aligning financial strategy with organizational priorities.

 

The ideal candidate is a seasoned financial leader with a strong background in nonprofit finance and a deep commitment to social justice. This individual will manage budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and compliance, while ensuring the organization maintains strong internal controls and audit readiness. The Director of Finance will also lead on implementing systems and processes that support sustainable growth and long-term financial health.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and management of AAPF’s annual budget, in collaboration with leadership and program teams.

  • Prepare and present timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to senior leadership and the Board.

  • Oversee accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and reconciliations.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local financial regulations and reporting requirements.

  • Coordinate annual audits and work closely with external auditors to ensure successful and timely completion.

  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls and financial policies.

  • Provide strategic financial analysis to inform decision-making and long-term planning.

  • Manage cash flow, financial forecasting, and reserves planning.

  • Support grant budgeting, funder reporting, and compliance with grant requirements.

  • Collaborate with the development team to align financial tracking with fundraising goals and grant proposals.

  • Supervise any finance or accounting staff and/or vendors as applicable.

 

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, preferably in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization. Accounting Certification preferred but not required.

  • Commitment to AAPF’s mission and values, with an understanding of the role finance plays in advancing equity and sustainability.

  • Demonstrated experience managing organizational budgets of $3M+, including grant-funded activities.

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.

  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks) and Excel; experience with financial systems implementation a plus.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Ability to translate complex financial information for diverse audiences.

 

Work Environment & Schedule

This role is based in New York City and operates in a hybrid environment. While much of the work can be done remotely, the role requires regular in-person collaboration with team members and occasional travel for events or conferences.

Compensation & Benefits

AAPF offers $95,000-$105,000 and a comprehensive benefits package that includes:
