Publication Art Director

Full-Time Salaried

The African American Policy Forum (AAPF) seeks a full time Art Director for our new daily news and commentary publication! This position is a full-time remote role. Reporting to AAPF’s Editor in Chief/Editorial Director and working closely with the publication team, the Art Director will oversee the visual style, layout, and graphic design of the publication.

About the Publication:

The daily news and commentary publication is committed to documenting—and fighting through—the intersecting crisis of racial justice and democratic decline in real time, and bringing together diverse constituencies, thinkers and activists to reclaim the true promise of multiracial democracy for us all. 

Duties and Responsibilities include: 

  • Overseeing the design, look and feel for a new web publication

  • Development of a design team through the hiring of staff and consultants

  • Assist in managing workflow for all creative projects

  • Programing daily visual content

  • Working to design and creatively host content from other media platforms (video, podcasts, etc.)

  • Illustrating and coordinating research graphics for longer-form reported projects

  • Help track, maintain and manage the creative budget

The Ideal Candidate should have:

  • Familiarity with Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality

  • A graphic arts degree and a minimum of five years’ experience

  • A strong editorial-graphics background and an ability to translate complicated ideas into accessible and clear visual language 

  • A talent for innovative and compelling digital design

  • An extensive network of freelance contacts and contributors

  • The ability to execute tight-turnaround assignments for a daily web publication


Anticipated start date: November 29, 2021


Compensation: $75,000-$90,000
